Turnip Rock is a small geological formation at the tip of Michigan's Thumb. It is a limestone stack located in Lake Huron, in shallow water a few yards from the offshore cliffs. Also near near a famous outcropping called the Thumbnail which is the extreme tip of Pointe Aux Barques.
Turnip Rock has been severely undercut by wave action, so that its top is significantly larger than its base. This unusual form looking like a turnip, has made it a famous attraction for viewing by kayakers and canoeists. The geologic formation is located on the shores of a privately owned community; Point Aux Barques, (Named by the French Voyageurs meaning "Tip of Ships") thus not open to the public. Port Austin, the nearest village and offers rentals and put-in points for kayaking trips to Turnip Rock. A concrete collar has been built around the base of Turnip Rock at the waterline to retard further undercutting.
Turnip Rock was one of twenty finalists in the 2013 "Seven Wonders of Michigan" contest sponsored by the Detroit Free Press and the Lansing State Journal. CNN named it one of most unusual rock formations in America. (1)
